Subscribers to register SIMs from anywhere under new NCA law

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced that a new Legislative Instrument (LI) for SIM card registration will enable subscribers to register their SIM cards from anywhere using secure digital platforms. The Director General of the NCA, Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, shared this update during a stakeholder engagement event on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

“In the new legislation, once it is passed, you will find that verification will take place in real-time. The law will provide a digital platform that allows you to register from anywhere. Since verification is mandatory, anyone with a smartphone can register independently, including those who are outside the country,” he said.

The proposed regulation introduces substantial reforms aimed at enhancing accessibility, security, and data integrity in the SIM registration process. Unlike the previous registration effort conducted between 2021 and 2023, which required subscribers to wait in line at dedicated telecom offices, the new framework utilizes digital technology to simplify the registration process while reinforcing verification protocols. “Subscribers will be able to register their SIM cards through secure digital platforms that support multi-factor authentication,” added Mr. Fianko.

The NCA believes the reforms will enhance convenience for users while ensuring that all SIM registrations are properly verified in real time, addressing gaps identified under the previous regulatory framework.
