Stop deceiving voters on election date – Mahama to journalists

Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has called on journalists to refrain from misleading voters about the election date as the December 7 polls draw near. Speaking at the peace pact signing ceremony in Accra on Thursday, November 28, Mahama emphasised the vital role of the media in ensuring a transparent and fair electoral process.

He urged journalists to uphold the highest standards of integrity and accuracy in their reporting, warning that any misinformation regarding the election date could have serious consequences for the democratic process. Mahama stressed the importance of providing voters with clear and accurate information to ensure they can exercise their right to vote without confusion. His appeal comes amid growing concerns about the spread of fake news and its potential to impact voter turnout and election results.

The call for accurate reporting follows the recent arrest of Kumasi-based radio and television presenter, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, who was granted bail after being charged with publishing false news. Asiedu was arrested on Saturday, November 23, 2024, following allegations that he had misled voters about voting for presidential candidates on separate days during the upcoming elections.

The statement, which rapidly spread on social media, was labelled by the Ghana Police Service as “false and likely to disturb the public peace.” Police indicated that the misinformation had the potential to create confusion among voters and undermine public trust in the integrity of the election process.

During his speech, Mahama also reiterated his commitment to a peaceful and orderly election, urging all stakeholders to collaborate in protecting Ghana’s democratic values.
