Sky train not coming – Amewu counters Joe Ghartey

The Minister for Railway Development, John Peter Amewu, has stated that the Ghanaian government cannot afford the construction of a Sky Train because the project demands huge sums of money.

Speaking on Citi TV on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, the Minister disclosed that no agreement has been signed on the construction of the sky train contrary to media reports.

“The sky train that we are talking about is the one that is going to run on columns in the sky like the ones you see in Dubai but no agreement has been signed. It is not possible to be done now. I don’t see any sky train being done in the next 3-4 years. There is not going to be any Sky train in the country. It is not possible,” he reiterated.

Then Sector Minister, Joe Ghartey in November 2019, on the sidelines of the African Investment Forum in South Africa signed the agreement for the construction of the Accra SkyTrain Project.

The agreement which involved a  total of 194 kilometres length routes was earmarked for Accra.

Four of which were to be comprised of radial routes that originate at the proposed SkyTrain Terminal, at the heart of Accra specifically at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

There would have been one other route that provides an intra-city commuter loop distribution service which would have also come from Circle.

But, John Peter Amewu, the Sector Minister said the government is unable to implement anything on the sky train project, basing his agreement on lack of funds.
