Dialysis

The ranking member on the Health Committee in Parliament, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has said the increase in the charges for dialysis at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital is unacceptable. Speaking on GHOne TV News with Naa Dedei Tettey, the ranking member stated that the justification for the increase such as high inflation among others is untenable.

“It’s highly unconscionable and points to the fact that the government is insensitive to the people in the country. It is a clear breach of the laws of the country. I say so because every public institution in the country cannot just charge any fees. They are all subjected to the Act we call the Fees and Charges Act.

“So before Korle-Bu can come to the conclusion that they are indeed charging Ghc765 it should be approved by Parliament. Unfortunately, from where I sit, we don’t have any such fees for them. So it is illegal and they must stop it with immediate effect,” Mr. Aknadoh stated.

Patients on dialysis at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital are lamenting a recent proposal for an upward adjustment in the cost of dialysis treatment, with an appeal to the government to absorb it under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Notices of a proposed increase in the cost of dialysis treatment from 380 cedis to 765.42 cedis, an over 100% increment has sparked a huge outcry from patients. While the Management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital maintains the notice of upward adjustment is just a proposal, subject to approval, public sentiments over the issue have dominated traditional and social media.

Starr News checks at the facility has revealed that patients on dialysis are extremely worried over the development.

They want the government to absorb the cost under the National Health Insurance Scheme.
