The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to acclaim Solomon Kwame Asimadu as its Parliamentary Candidate for the upcoming Akwatia by-election, scheduled for September 2, 2025. A gathering of polling station executives is planned for tomorrow in Bodua, a town near Akwatia, to officially endorse Asimadu following an internal consensus process. This development was confirmed by Eastern Regional NPP Chairman Jeff Konadu during an interview on Neat FM’s morning show, hosted by Mac-Jerry Osei Agyemang, on Tuesday, July 29.
Mr. Konadu stated that preparations for the acclamation are well underway, enabling the party to begin its campaign immediately after the formal endorsement. According to him, Solomon Kwame Asimadu, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Owuo Mining Company Limited, was selected as the preferred candidate after extensive internal research and consultations within the constituency.
“All the party’s intelligence and research on the ground clearly pointed to Mr. Asimadu as the people’s favourite. The decision to settle on him reflects the will of the grassroots,” Konadu stated. He further explained that the party’s leadership resolved to avoid a competitive primary to prevent divisions and disunity, citing previous instances of post-primary tensions that led to apathy during the last elections.
“In the past, primaries created internal conflicts that lingered into the main election. We don’t want a repeat of that. This time, the party’s council has taken a strategic decision to preserve unity and momentum,” he added. Mr. Konadu also noted that the party has already begun a reconciliation process involving the three aspirants who initially expressed interest in the race.
“We have met with all three to explain the party’s position and ensure we enter this by-election with a united front.” The by-election in Akwatia follows the unfortunate demise of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, and is expected to be a keenly contested race as parties vie for control of the seat.
