Aspirants vying to become the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer will draw lots for their positions on the ballot paper this Friday, October 10, 2025, in preparation for the party’s presidential primary on January 31, 2026. The National Elections Committee will meet with the five contenders or their representatives at the party’s Accra headquarters to oversee the process.
According to NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed, the balloting will be open to all aspirants who have met the party’s requirements. “All candidates who have adhered to the guidelines issued on July 29 will participate in the balloting today. No one will be exempt from any of the party’s stipulated guidelines,” Mr. Mohammed emphasised.
He emphasised that the procedures were in accordance with the party’s constitution and must be respected by all contestants. “These guidelines are grounded in the constitution, and every member who wants to lead the party into the 2028 elections must abide by it,” he added. Meanwhile, the Communications Director of Kwabena Agyepong’s campaign team, Paul Abdul Rahman Issah Dowuona, has reaffirmed that Mr. Agyepong remains firmly in the race despite recent controversy surrounding the GH₵4 million development fee.
Mr. Dowuona clarified that Mr. Agyepong has taken a principled stand against the GH₵4 million payment, although the party insists the amount must be paid. He noted that Mr. Agyepong made his position clear during his vetting, stating his opposition to the fee being a condition for contesting.
However, Mr. Agyepong also expressed his willingness to support the party’s development in other ways. “During the vetting, he reiterated that while he does not agree with the fee as a prerequisite for the flagbearer race, he is prepared to make a significant contribution to the party’s development if necessary. His main concern is that such payments should not be mandatory for contesting the flagbearership,” Mr. Dowuona added.
Presently, five aspirants have declared their intentions to contest to become NPP’s flagbearer to contest for the highest seat in 2028. They include Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyepong. The outcome of the balloting will determine the order in which the five NPP flagbearer hopefuls will appear on the ballot paper for the upcoming election.
