Nine people have died after a boat capsized on the Volta Lake in the East Gonja District. The accident occurred on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, around 5:30 PM, between Sikakope and Mataiko on the Yeji–Congo route. The boat was carrying 14 passengers and reportedly overturned due to bad weather. Five male passengers were rescued, while the victims included women and children.
Salisu Be-Awuribe, the Savannah Regional Minister, informed JoyNews that authorities are providing support to the families affected by this tragedy. He mentioned that district NADMO officers have been dispatched to the scene, and resources are being mobilised to assist the victims’ families. Be-Awuribe described the loss of nine lives as deeply unfortunate. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing to locate any survivors or missing persons.
