suspension on three schools—Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SHTS), New Juaben Senior High School (SHS), and New Nsutam Senior High Technical School (SHTS)—barring them from all sporting and co-curricular activities. The directive, announced by Eastern Regional Director of Education, Madam Ivy Asantewa Owusu, prohibits the schools from participating in quizzes, debates, cadet programmes, and entertainment events. In addition, each institution has been fined GHC 500 and will be held responsible for any costs arising from property damage or injuries.
The sanctions follow disturbing reports of gang rape and stabbing incidents during a recent inter-school sports competition in Koforidua. Investigations revealed that students from the affected schools engaged in acts of hooliganism, breaching both the GES Code of Conduct and the Eastern Region Schools and Colleges Sports Association Code of Discipline.
Two underage students have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang rape and are facing prosecution, while a third suspect, reportedly a former student, remains at large. Police have charged the suspects with conspiracy to commit a crime and rape. In a separate incident, another student was arrested for allegedly stabbing a fellow pupil near the sports stadium.
Madam Owusu emphasised that the sanctions align with Section 2.17 of the GES Code of Conduct, particularly provisions on physical and psychological violence, as well as Articles VII and VIII, which address disturbances, hooliganism, and related punishments.
