Gov’t to revamp Ghana’s broadcasting policy to embrace digital convergence – Sam George

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation has announced plans to comprehensively review Ghana’s broadcasting policy to address the increasing overlap between traditional and digital media platforms. Speaking at a high-level media forum in Accra on Friday, September 26, Samuel Nartey George explained that the review will focus on modernising the legal framework to reflect the convergence of radio, television, and internet-based broadcasting within a single ecosystem.

“The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation is reviewing Ghana’s broadcasting policy framework to reflect the realities of digital convergence, where radio, television, and internet-based broadcasting increasingly overlap within a single ecosystem,” George stated.

The Minister noted that the review will be conducted in close collaboration with the Ministry of Government Communications and other key stakeholders to ensure a fair, evidence-based update of the broadcasting bill. The forum, organised by the Africa Media Bureau convened regulators, industry leaders, policymakers, and technology experts to discuss strategies for modernising Ghana’s media landscape.

Under the theme, “Aligning Policy, Technology and Global Best Practices for a Resilient Media Landscape,” discussions explored how emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and 5G, evolving consumer habits, and regulatory challenges are transforming content creation, distribution, and monetisation. The Ministry’s initiative aims to create a policy framework that supports innovation, strengthens media resilience, and positions Ghana at the forefront of digital broadcasting development.
