Government declines MTN Ghana’s GH¢20 million offer to support South Africa evacuees.

The government has declined MTN Ghana’s offer to donate GH¢20 million to support Ghanaians affected by the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. The government stated that it has already made adequate financial provisions for evacuation and reintegration efforts.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 26, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs acknowledged media reports indicating that MTN Ghana intended to make the donation, following comments from the company’s Board Chairman, Dr. Ishmael Yamson. “The Government of Ghana commends MTN for the offer; however, we respectfully decline,” the Ministry said.

According to the statement, the government had already communicated this decision to MTN’s Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer during a meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on August 14. The Ministry noted that the Mahama administration, along with local partners, had made adequate provisions for the ongoing evacuations and reintegration of Ghanaians returning from South Africa and was therefore unable to accept the company’s financial support.

The Ministry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to funding the evacuation exercise and providing reintegration assistance to every Ghanaian brought back from South Africa. Additionally, it pledged to publish a comprehensive account of the total cost of the evacuation exercise once it is completed.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured the public that, upon completion of the evacuation exercise, it will release a full account of the total expenditure incurred, underscoring its commitment to transparency and accountability.

The government further reaffirmed its dedication to fostering a conducive business climate for international enterprises operating in Ghana, irrespective of their country of origin. “We remain resolute in building the most supportive ecosystem for all global brands to thrive in Ghana, regardless of where their businesses are headquartered,” the Ministry emphasised.
