The tragic hit-and-run incident on the Achimota Highway, which claimed the lives of two former Achimota School students, has reignited concerns over road safety and driver responsibility in Ghana. Addressing the issue, the Acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, attributed such accidents to widespread indiscipline and negligence among both drivers and pedestrians.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, March 10, Amaliba expressed deep concern over the increasing disregard for road traffic regulations, stressing that reckless behavior remains a major contributor to Ghana’s high rate of road crashes. He reaffirmed the NRSA’s commitment to enforcing traffic laws more strictly to curb these dangerous tendencies and prevent further loss of life. “When I took over the NRSA, I realised there were two main causes of road crashes, driver and pedestrian indiscipline, and so if we are able to curb these two, we will make a lot of headway,” he stated.
He emphasized the authority’s resolve to clamp down on road indiscipline, adding, “Coming in as Acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority, we are determined to enforce the laws to deal with the indiscipline on our roads to reduce accidents.” Beyond enforcement, Amaliba revealed that the NRSA is preparing to launch a nationwide public awareness campaign to promote discipline and responsible road use.
“There will be some sanity on our roads in the coming days. Very soon, we will partner with the media and run a promo using a prominent Ghanaian to campaign on discipline,” he assured. With road safety concerns growing, the NRSA’s renewed focus on enforcement and public awareness is expected to play a crucial role in addressing Ghana’s persistent road crash problem.
