Abdul Karim Zito has stepped down as head coach of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club with immediate effect, ending weeks of speculation about his future. The club announced his resignation on Monday through its official social media channels. In a statement, management confirmed it had accepted Zito’s decision, expressed gratitude for his service, and wished him success in his future endeavours.
“Abdul Karim Zito Kabutey has resigned from his role as head coach of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club with immediate effect. Management has accepted the resignation and expressed its appreciation to the coach for his services,” the statement read, adding that details of the club’s new technical direction would be shared soon.
Zito’s departure follows Kotoko’s elimination from the MTN FA Cup last weekend, a result that intensified pressure on the technical team and fueled widespread calls for change. Earlier on Monday, the club’s management had indicated that no final decision had been taken regarding the coach’s future, although they admitted they were “not fully satisfied” with the team’s performance and overall results this season.
By resigning, Zito effectively avoided a potential dismissal. Under the terms of his contract, the club would have been required to give him one month’s notice or pay a compensation amount of GHS 120,000 had he been sacked.
