FDA Raids Makola Market, Seizes Cigarette‑Shaped Candy; One Arrested

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), supported by the Ghana Police Service and National Security, has arrested one person and confiscated cigarette‑shaped candy being sold at the Makola Market in Accra.

The enforcement action followed public complaints and social media reports highlighting the sale of the products. The FDA explained that the items pose concern because Ghana’s tobacco control laws prohibit the advertisement and depiction of tobacco and related products at points of sale and in the media.

Citing the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), and the Tobacco Control Regulations, 2016 (L.I. 2247), the Authority stressed that the raid forms part of its broader efforts to ensure products on the Ghanaian market meet safety and public health standards.

The FDA reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant agencies to enforce regulations and protect the public from potentially harmful or non‑compliant products.
