Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has urged a comprehensive national response to drug abuse, framing it as a public health, social, and developmental challenge that goes beyond law enforcement. Representing President John Dramani Mahama at the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (World Drug Day) on Monday, July 6, Mr. Debrah warned that drug abuse continues to endanger families, communities, and the future of Ghana’s youth.
‘Drug abuse is not merely a security issue; it is a public health, social, and developmental concern that undermines families, communities, and the potential of our young people,’ he stated. He emphasised the government’s commitment to intensifying efforts against illicit trafficking while expanding access to treatment, recovery, and reintegration services for those battling addiction. The administration’s strategy, he added, also prioritises prevention through investments in education, skills training, and employment opportunities for young people.
‘Prevention begins with hope, purpose, and opportunity, and this government remains focused on creating those opportunities for our youth,’ Mr. Debrah affirmed. The Chief of Staff urged young people to avoid drug abuse and safeguard their future. “To every young Ghanaian: your future is priceless, protect it,” he said.
The event, held under the theme “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” brought together government officials, security agencies, civil society organisations, development partners, traditional and religious leaders, and young people to reaffirm their commitment to tackling drug abuse and illicit trafficking through prevention, enforcement, rehabilitation and sustained collaboration.
