Two people have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a building in Cape Coast, the Central Regional capital. Hospital authorities identified the deceased as 12‑year‑old Anastasia Abakah and 40‑year‑old Adwoa Baduwa. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, 2026, after heavy rainfall caused a single‑room structure at Gyagyaano, behind Yogurt Fie on Idan Fourth Alley, to cave in.
Rescue teams from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), drawn from the Cape Coast Metropolitan and Central Regional Headquarters Sub‑Stations, swiftly responded and managed to extricate four occupants trapped beneath the rubble. The victims — one male and three females — were transported by the National Ambulance Service to the Ewim Polyclinic for treatment.
Subsequent checks at the hospital, however, confirmed the deaths of Anastasia Abakah and Adwoa Baduwa. According to the Central Regional Command of the GNFS, preliminary investigations indicate that the collapse was caused by heavy rainfall, which weakened the structural integrity of the building.
The Fire Service has advised residents occupying old mud houses and buildings showing signs of structural weakness to have them assessed by qualified professionals and to evacuate any structures deemed unsafe, particularly during the rainy season.
