A Ghana Armed Forces escort convoy transporting 140 civilians came under attack on Monday morning in the Binduri area of the Upper East Region, leading to the deaths of three civilians and injuries to one other. According to a press statement issued by the military later that night, the convoy—en route from Bawku to Bolgatanga—was ambushed and fired upon multiple times by unidentified assailants. The civilians were being escorted by the military at the time of the incident [April 27, 2026].

Troops accompanying the convoy returned fire and successfully repelled the assault, killing seven of the attackers in the process. In the course of pursuing the fleeing assailants, the military personnel retrieved a G3 automatic rifle, two fully loaded magazines of 20 rounds each, and 176 additional rounds of ammunition from an escapee who went to hide in a mosque.

Ten suspects have since been arrested and are assisting security agencies with ongoing investigations into the incident. The attack adds to growing security concerns in parts of the Upper East Region, particularly along the Bawku-Bolgatanga corridor, where tensions have persisted in recent times.
