The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has assured that the ongoing power disruptions across Ghana will be stabilised by the end of the week, thanks to emergency interventions at the Akosombo power system. Richmond Rockson, the Director of Communications at the Ministry, stated that engineers are implementing temporary measures to restore electricity supply after a fire severely damaged critical infrastructure at a GRIDCO substation in Akosombo.
His comments come in response to widespread consumer complaints about erratic electricity supply in various parts of the country. Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, April 27, Mr. Rockson explained that the situation resulted from the fire that destroyed GRIDCo’s primary control room, making full restoration a more prolonged task.
“The whole control room has to be rebuilt, and that will take a number of months,” he said. “What will restore power to normalcy immediately is a temporary measure to bypass the control room.” He disclosed that engineers have begun work on bypassing the damaged system to quickly stabilise the electricity supply.
Mr Rockson further revealed that partial generation has already resumed at the Akosombo Dam, with one of the six turbine units currently operational to support temporary restoration efforts.
“The engineers have assured us that within the week, or at the latest by the close of the week, supply should return to normal,” he stated.
The Ministry said the interim solution is aimed at easing the immediate impact on households and businesses, while longer-term reconstruction of the damaged infrastructure continues.
