The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has directed the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Ing. Mark Awuah Baah, to step aside pending investigations into a fire outbreak at the Akosombo Power Control Centre. This directive follows a significant fire incident at the facility that has severely disrupted power transmission and contributed to widespread outages across the country.
The fire affected critical control systems at the Akosombo installation and has been linked to ongoing instability in the electricity supply, with multiple regions in Ghana experiencing prolonged power cuts. Authorities have stated that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage to essential infrastructure. The Minister’s decision to have the GRIDCo CEO step aside aims to ensure an independent and transparent investigation into the incident.
Additionally, there has been a major shake-up in the leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region. These changes are believed to be part of broader efforts to strengthen operational efficiency and improve power distribution amid the current challenges in the energy sector.
Recent developments have occurred amid growing public concern about the reliability of electricity supply, as both businesses and households struggle with the challenges posed by ongoing outages. The Minister is scheduled to provide further details during a press briefing at 2:00 p.m. on Monday.
This briefing will focus on recent changes in electricity distribution, current interventions, and the measures being implemented to stabilise the national grid. The government has assured the public of its commitment to restoring a stable power supply and addressing the underlying issues contributing to these disruptions.
