President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana will implement a visa-free regime for all African nationals travelling to the country, beginning May 25, 2026, in commemoration of Africa Day. The announcement was made during a state visit by Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa. According to President Mahama, the initiative is designed to strengthen Ghana’s role as a hub of Pan-Africanism while boosting tourism and intra-African trade. He explained that the policy will be incorporated into a broader e-visa system set to launch next month under his administration.
“I am pleased to confirm that from May 25, Africans travelling to Ghana will be able to obtain their e-visas online at no cost. Between Ghana and Zimbabwe, however, we already enjoy a visa-free arrangement—you can simply board a plane and enter each other’s country without a visa,” he said. President Mahama also indicated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will intensify efforts to secure additional visa waiver agreements for Ghanaian passport holders. Meanwhile, the two countries have signed 10 MoUs to strengthen bilateral relations.
