The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of misleading the public on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill. His remarks came after President Mahama, during a meeting with civil society organisations at the Jubilee House on Monday, March 30, stated that addressing Ghana’s fundamental needs takes precedence over the bill.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, March 31, Rev. Fordjour alleged that the NDC had used the bill as a political campaign tool while in opposition. He urged the government to treat Ghanaians with greater seriousness and ensure the bill’s passage. “We are asking the President to take Ghanaians a bit more seriously. You promised to sign the LGBT bill immediately upon winning power. Many believed this and voted for you. After assuming office, you assured the Catholic Bishops’ Conference and other religious bodies that you would even sponsor a government-backed bill to address the matter,” he said.
He also criticised religious and civil society groups for what he described as their silence over the delay in passing the bill. “Where are the ecumenical bodies? Where are the faith-based organisations? Where are the Imams, pastors, traditional rulers and CSOs who were very vocal in 2024 and strongly criticised President Akufo-Addo?” he added.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has been a major subject of political debate in Ghana, with both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) taking varying positions on it over time.
