The 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Secretariat has unveiled plans to create over 160,000 direct and indirect jobs through a new partnership with ATRI Energy Transition Private Limited, an India-based renewable energy and mobility solutions firm. The Memorandum of Understanding, signed at a brief ceremony in Accra on Thursday, March 5, is part of efforts to strengthen private sector involvement in Ghana’s emerging 24-hour economy.
Presidential Advisor Augustus Goosie Tanoh explained that the initiative is expected to generate approximately 165,000 jobs through projects such as the cultivation of 40,000 hectares of grass plantations, the establishment of solar parks, agro-ecological zones, and value chain activities tied to energy and transport infrastructure. He noted that this agreement marks the first in a series of joint ventures aimed at delivering up to 2,000 megawatts of renewable energy into the national grid within the next five years
According to him, the projects—including solar generation, battery energy storage systems and biomass-to-power ventures—will be developed through a special purpose vehicle known as PAX Energy, owned by the Secretariat and its partners, with additional private sector investment expected from ATRI and other collaborators.
“We are focused on delivering structured, affordable, and sustainable power to support the multi-economic corridor under the 24-hour economy programme,” Mr. Tanoh stated. He explained that the tariff framework ensures affordability, with costs capped at seven cents per kilowatt hour when battery storage is included, and maintained between four and five cents without storage—significantly lower than the current average of 15 cents.
Mr. Tanoh further noted that the initiative will enhance Ghana’s energy self-sufficiency, particularly in light of rising peak demand driven by electric vehicle charging and the expansion of data centres. He added that the Secretariat is working closely with key institutions, including the Ministry of Energy, to advance this agenda.
