The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has extended its congratulations to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia following his decisive victory in the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31, 2026. The party declared confidence in its prospects as it looks ahead to the 2028 general elections.
Dr. Bawumia secured the flagbearer position with 56.48 percent of the total votes cast, firmly establishing himself as the party’s candidate for 2028. Former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong placed second, garnering 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 percent. In a statement issued on January 31 and signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party formally endorsed the outcome and rallied members to unite behind Dr. Bawumia as preparations for the next national contest begin.
“The Party congratulates Dr. Bawumia on his emphatic victory and wishes him well as he leads the NPP into the 2028 General Elections,” the statement said.
The party applauded all five aspirants—Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong—for their dedication to democratic values and the maturity demonstrated throughout the primary process.
It further expressed gratitude to the Presidential Elections Committee, chaired by Joseph Osei Owusu, alongside the Electoral Commission of Ghana, the Ghana Police Service, the media, and party delegates for their roles in delivering a peaceful, transparent, and incident-free election. Looking ahead, the NPP emphasised the need for unity and collective purpose as it prepares for the 2028 general elections, urging members and supporters to rally firmly behind Dr. Bawumia.
“As the contest has now concluded, the NPP calls on all members and supporters to unite, reconcile, and rally behind our elected flagbearer in the supreme interest of the Party. United in purpose, the NPP will work tirelessly to secure victory in the next general elections. The elephant is the winning symbol, and by the grace of God, we shall prevail,” the statement added.
