NPP picks Baba Ali for Ayawaso East by-election

The New Patriotic Party has settled on Baba Ali as its candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election. Speaking on Citi TV’s Eyewitness News on Monday, January 26, Greater Accra Regional Chairman Divine Agorhom explained that the choice was made after careful consideration of Ali’s experience and his ability to quickly build strong working relationships within the party. He noted that the party sought a candidate well-versed in its structures, respected in the constituency, and capable of engaging voters at the grassroots.

“We wanted someone with party experience, someone recognised and respected within the organisation, and above all, someone with the humility and ability to reach out—knocking on doors, engaging everyone, and working effectively within the limited time available to win the constituency’s support,” Mr. Agorhom stated. According to Mr Agorhom, consultations within the party showed that Baba Ali met all the requirements set by the leadership.

“The candidate we have settled on meets all the criteria we outlined, and with that, we are confident moving forward. We have chosen the constituency secretary, Baba Ali,” he added. Mr. Agorhom further emphasised that Baba Ali has twice served as constituency secretary and enjoys the unanimous support of the constituency leadership. “He has held the position on two occasions, and the entire leadership has agreed that he is the right choice,” he noted.

Meanwhile, six aspirants have picked nomination forms to contest the National Democratic Congress parliamentary primary in Ayawaso East ahead of the March 3 by-election. Among them are constituency chairman Mohammed Ramme, Hajia Amina Adam—the widow of the late Member of Parliament, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, and Dr. Yakubu Azindow.
