Taxi driver shot dead during encounter with policewoman at Weija

A taxi driver was fatally shot at Tetegu, near Weija in the Greater Accra Region, following a confrontation with a policewoman, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed. The incident occurred on Monday, January 19, 2026. According to a press release issued on January 20 by the Police Public Affairs Directorate, the policewoman involved sustained injuries during the encounter and is currently receiving medical treatment. Preliminary investigations suggest the shooting resulted from a dispute between the two parties.

The driver, who was operating a Hyundai i10, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Police Hospital. Deputy Superintendent of Police Richmond Mensah, Acting Director-General of Public Affairs, stated that the policewoman sustained her injuries while attempting to leave the scene. “Investigation further indicates that the policewoman was hit by a vehicle and sustained injuries to her head and both legs as she attempted to leave the scene.”

She is currently on admission receiving medical attention,” the statement said. Police said exhibits retrieved from the scene included one live 9mm round, a magazine, and one spent 9mm cartridge. The Ghana Police Service said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing and updates will be provided as the process continues. The identities of the deceased driver and the policewoman involved have not yet been disclosed
