Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, a distinguished surgeon and former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, has openly criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asserting that the party no longer embodies the principles it once stood for. Appearing on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, January 12, he remarked, “The present NPP is not NPP. It is fake.
From what I see now, this is not the NPP I used to know.” When asked if he still identifies as a member of the party, the former minister clarified that he does not associate himself with what he described as its current form. “Not the fake one. The real one exists virtually, with its members operating in the background,” he explained.
Prof Frimpong-Boateng expressed deep concern about the internal processes of the party, particularly the way its last flagbearer was elected. He alleged that the process was marred by manipulation, bribery and intimidation of delegates.
“Look at how they elected their last flagbearer, twist people’s arms, bribing delegates and intimidating others to get a flagbearer. This is a beginning of corruption. This should not be allowed in any serious institution or any serious party,” he stated.
He attributed the party’s internal challenges to its poor showing in the last general elections, stressing that the NPP had failed to adequately confront the issues that contributed to its defeat. “We lost the elections badly, yet we refuse to address the causes of those losses. If the old flagbearer is chosen again, I believe it will be a disaster,” he remarked.
When asked if his criticism was aimed at the party’s flagbearer, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng quickly clarified: “No, no, no. Bawumia is a very pleasant person, but being pleasant alone is not enough to lead Nkrumah’s Ghana.”
