No proxy voting in 2026 NPP presidential primaries – Election Committee reaffirms ban

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reaffirmed that proxy voting will be disallowed in its 2026 presidential primary, following an extensive review of petitions submitted by party members. This decision was finalised after a closed-door meeting in Accra involving the Presidential Election Committee and all aspirants.

According to Chairman Joseph Osei Owusu, the committee thoroughly examined the concerns regarding the prohibition but determined that permitting proxy voting might undermine the election’s transparency and integrity. “We’ve read the petitions presented by sections of the party.

And after listening to all that, we came to a conclusion that for the sake of conducting an election that is incident-free, an election that is respected, an election in which it’s accessible to all, a very credible election, that provision or that ban should be maintained,” Osei Owusu told journalists. “We will still not have proxy voting in the 2026 presidential primaries.”

Under this directive, all registered delegates must be physically present at their designated polling centres to cast their votes. To enhance transparency, the committee provided each aspirant with soft copies of the provisional voters’ register. Osei Owusu urged candidates to carefully review the document and submit any corrections through the official channels before it is publicly displayed at the constituencies.

The topic of proxy voting re-emerged when some members expressed concerns that prohibiting it could exclude delegates who are on official assignments, unwell, or otherwise unable to be present on election day. Nevertheless, the committee insisted that attending in person was essential to guarantee a credible and smooth election.

Osei Owusu described the meeting as both constructive and calm, highlighting the committee’s dedication to upholding transparency in the run-up to the 2026 NPP presidential primaries.
