The Eastern South Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Alhaji Sofo Azorka, the National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He was arrested in connection with an alleged assault on Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the third National Vice Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), during the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025.
Alhaji Azorka was apprehended in Tamale on Wednesday, September 10, as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident. According to a statement from the Police, he was granted bail after providing a caution statement. He has been instructed to report to the Eastern South Regional Police Command in Kyebi on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 10 a.m., where he will be formally arraigned in court.
“The suspect has been cautioned and released on bail to report to the Regional Command on the specified date,” the statement said. The Police assured the public that a thorough investigation will take place and urged everyone to remain calm as the case develops. “We want to assure the public that we will conduct a comprehensive investigation into this matter. The Ghana Police Service is committed to maintaining law and order. We ask all parties and the public to remain calm as we continue our investigation and will provide updates in due course,” the statement added.
