Focus on ideas, not insults – Bawumia tells NPP flagbearer hopefuls

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to maintain decorum as they approach the party’s presidential primary, scheduled for January 2026. Speaking on Wednesday, August 13, when over 490 youth organizers—including substantive and deputy youth leaders from constituencies across the nation—submitted his nomination forms, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of avoiding insults during the campaign.

“I want this flagbearership election to be conducted with respect. We are not in a campaign of insults, and we should not engage in one. The focus should be on ideas, as that is what will capture the imagination of Ghanaians. We need to ask ourselves: What ideas do we have? What are we bringing to the table? How can we address the problems that Ghanaians face?” he advised.

Dr. Bawumia warned that negative campaigning could harm the party and provide ammunition for its opponents. “When we tear each other down, we ultimately damage the party. Our opponents will take our negative messages and use them against us. I will not insult any fellow aspirant, and you should not hear any insults from me. Once this election is over, we need to prepare for the general election. If we divide ourselves now, we will struggle to unite later. Therefore, let us start this process with unity and end with unity, as that will lead us to victory in 2028.”
