The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has arrested one of the directors of Nyarkotey University College of Holistic Medicine and Technology, located in Ashaiman, Greater Accra Region, for operating unaccredited programs. Dr. Ademan Tetteh was taken into custody on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
GTEC officials, accompanied by officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), visited the university and encountered Dr. Tetteh, who is one of the three owners of the institution. The other two directors, Daniel Tetteh Boafo and Professor Nyarkotey Obu, were not present during the visit. After waiting for some time without the two directors arriving and due to the authorities’ inability to provide proof of accreditation, CID officials had no choice but to detain Dr. Tetteh for further questioning.
Additionally, the Registrar of the university was arrested, and both individuals were taken to the CID Headquarters for further investigations. It was also discovered that Dr. Tetteh was allegedly using an unearned doctoral title.
Upon questioning he said it was an honorary title conferred upon him. Addressing journalists after the arrest, the Director for Corporate Affairs at GTEC, Jerry Sarfo said, “This is something we’re doing because there have been persistent calls for people to desist from running unaccredited programmes and they keep doing it. So, there was the need for us to actually enforce compliance.
“So yes, we came here to have a look at this, and we have actually had some interactions with the director who happens to be one of the three directors here and the registrar was the management member here. And we’re going to actually have further interactions with them at the police station”.
He added that, “So as it is now, I think this is what we can say for now but regarding the professorship thing that we saw, I think we need to interrogate further. Yes, we have seen that they have been offered Doctorship and honorary professorship and we need to look at it first before we are able to justify.
“So, for that one we don’t want to be in there. But the purpose for which we’re here is for the fact that the institution is running an unaccredited programme which we frown upon as a Commission”. He stressed.
