NPP should’ve apologised, not boasted at Delegates Conference – Frank Afriyie

Member of Parliament for Afadjato, Frank Afriyie, criticized the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he calls a tone-deaf and arrogant attitude during the party’s National Delegates Conference. In an interview on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, July 21, he stated that the NPP squandered a crucial opportunity to express remorse for the economic hardship and unmet promises that contributed to its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

“The NPP had a glorious opportunity to address their poor performance in 2024 at the conference. I expected them to apologise to Ghanaians and sincerely express their regret,” Afriyie remarked. He condemned the party’s defiant rhetoric at the event, describing it as dismissive of the genuine frustrations faced by Ghanaians.

“When you come out and say that we are not broken, we are fighters, and we have never been defeated, it comes across as out of touch. If you want to build trust, you need to acknowledge the concerns of the people.” Afriyie expressed particular concern over the NPP’s decision to project a message of resilience without admitting to its governance failures, including what he termed “faulty policy that never materialised” and “the imposed hardship” on the population.

“But when you come on such a big platform and tell Ghanaians that when you come, you will do worse, I see that as problematic,” he stressed. His remarks come after the MP for Nhyiaeso, Stephen Amoah and the General Secretary of the NPP claimed that Ghanaians had regretted voting for the NDC just six months after the 2024 elections.

The Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s in a speech also urged party members to rally behind a renewed sense of purpose, discipline, and unity. Afenyo-Markin insisted the NPP is not a broken party and accused the ruling NDC government of worsening the economic situation since taking office.
