Mr. Ofori Collins, the Assistant Station Officer (ASO) and Hohoe Municipal Fire Safety Officer with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has urged the public to refrain from recycling rusty gas cylinders by simply repainting them. He emphasized that repainting only enhances the appearance of the exterior and does not restore the cylinder to a safe or new condition.
During a sensitization forum at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Hohoe, ASO Ofori urged the congregation to avoid overfilling their gas cylinders in an attempt to make them last longer. He emphasized that gas station attendants are aware of the maximum capacity for each cylinder, so it is important to refrain from purchasing gas beyond the recommended limits. Additionally, ASO Ofori advised the attendees not to place stones on the regulators of their gas cylinders. Instead, they should replace the regulators promptly if they notice any faults in order to prevent potential fire hazards.
He said fire outbreaks were primarily the result of personal factors, adding that many people multitasked and did many things at the same time and mostly forgot themselves. ASO Ofori admonished them to do one thing at a time. He asked them to turn off all electrical appliances when going out, no matter the distance.
ASO Ofori urged the public to always prioritise safety and security, noting that most fire outbreaks in the country could have been prevented. He said in cases of accidents; the Fire Service should be the first point of call adding that safety was a shared responsibility.
