Parliament has given the green light to abolish the COVID-19 levy, a tax that was implemented under the Akufo-Addo administration to cover pandemic-related costs. The levy’s removal was confirmed following the Finance Minister’s announcement in the 2026 budget. The government stated that scrapping the levy will lessen financial pressure on families, bolster businesses, and accelerate the country’s economic recovery and growth.
During the parliamentary debate, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin welcomed the move but called for further action. He urged the government to also eliminate the One Ghana Cedi levy on petroleum products and the 18 percent electricity surcharge, saying that doing so would demonstrate a genuine commitment to removing what he described as nuisance taxes.
