The running mate to the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has urged party members and supporters to remain calm, tolerant, and focused in the face of recent internal tensions, warning that disunity could undermine the party’s chances in the 2028 general elections.
In a statement on his official Facebook page, on September 3, 2025, Dr Opoku Prempeh called for a united NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections. “Our recent setbacks are undeniable, but in every trial lies a turning point,” he posted. According to him, “If we unite with one purpose, set our minds on a shared vision, and work with discipline, 2028 will be ours to win. We must win for Ghana’s progress and for generations to come.”
Napo added that, “But I sincerely believe that if we set our minds to it, and if we unite, the NPP can win 2028. NPP must win in 2028 for the benefit of this country. Although the linkage is blurred, Dr Prempeh’s post comes after the NPP lost the by-election in the Akwatia Constituency on September 2. The National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Bernard Bediako Baidoo won the election with nearly 3,000 votes. Meanwhile, the NPP MP for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, has said that the NPP will bounce back stronger and win the Akwatia seat.
He commended party executives for the work done during the by-election, although they could not win. In a post on his Facebook page, he said “The final certified results by the EC has confirmed the NDC candidate as the winner of the by-election. We must learn to be patient at all times to allow the Election Commission to do their work rather than always rushing to go ahead of them which has the potential to heighten tensions.
“Congratulations to the entire team that were deployed by the party in Akwatia. You guys did an impressive job. Better luck next time. And to the NDC and the MP elect I say ayekoo for fighting hard to win the seat. We are going back to the drawing board to do our homework and come back stronger in 2028. GOD BLESS OUR HOMELAND GHANA AND MAKE IT GREAT AND STRONG.”
