The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not participate in the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election to replace the late MP, Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who tragically died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025. This decision, made during a National Steering Committee meeting on August 11, was influenced by the context of the vacancy and concerns about increasing political polarization.
The party deemed it “inhumane and unconscionable” to engage in a competitive election shortly after such a tragedy, cautioning that by-elections often foster tension and hostility. The NPP stated that the best tribute it could pay to the late MP is to promote unity and address issues like illegal mining, while also ensuring a smooth and peaceful transition for the people of Tamale Central. The party emphasised that when the Electoral Commission opens nominations, it will refrain from participating in the contest in line with what it considers to be in the national interest.
