Holding presidential primaries in January is a big mistake – Paul Afoko warns NPP

Paul Awentami Afoko, the former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has warned the party against its decision to hold presidential primaries in January 2026, calling it a significant strategic error. Speaking on Starr Chat with Bola Ray on Thursday, September 4, Afoko explained that the party’s tradition of renewal typically follows a structured cycle that begins at the polling station level and progresses up to the national level before selecting a flagbearer.

He stated, “I believe the party is making a serious mistake by holding presidential primaries in January. There are two reasons for this: First, our party usually undergoes a renewal cycle every four years, starting from the polling stations up to the national level. After the national executive is in place, then we hold the presidential primaries.”

While raising concerns about the timing, Afoko was quick to emphasise that he holds no personal preference in the upcoming contest. “I don’t have a favourite when it comes to who I think will become the flagbearer of the NPP. I wish them well, but I don’t have a favourite,” he stated.
