A new poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics has identified Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, as the leading candidate to guide the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into the 2028 general elections. The survey indicates that Haruna Iddrisu has garnered 30% support, placing him ahead of NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who received 24%.
Finance Minister Ato Forson follows with 18%, while Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has 10%. North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa secured 8%. Other potential candidates, including Eric Opoku, Joshua Alabi, Armah-Kofi Buah, and Kwame Awuah-Darko, each received 2%, and Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah received 1%. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije did not receive significant support in the poll. When tested in alternative scenarios, Haruna Iddrisu’s lead becomes even more pronounced.
In a three-way race excluding Ato Forson, he widens his lead to 45%, compared to Asiedu Nketia’s 37% and Julius Debrah’s 18%. Among NDC supporters alone, his backing rises to 47%, with particularly strong appeal in key swing regions where he garners 48% support.
The dynamics change significantly if Haruna Iddrisu is not part of the contest. In this scenario, Asiedu Nketia takes the lead with 40%, just ahead of Ato Forson, who has 38%, while Julius Debrah accounts for 22%. Among core NDC voters, the race is nearly tied—Asiedu Nketia has 42%, and Ato Forson follows closely with 41%.
Notably, Forson performs best in the swing regions, where he surpasses Asiedu with 47% support compared to the Chairman’s 38%. These findings indicate that while Haruna Iddrisu is currently the clear favorite, his absence would create a highly competitive two-horse race between Asiedu Nketia and Ato Forson, potentially reshaping the NDC’s succession landscape as they approach the 2028 elections.
