The government has announced plans to acquire 500 new buses in the short to medium term to strengthen the operations of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) and improve public transport across the country. The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, made this announcement in Parliament on Thursday, October 30, 2025. He outlined the initiative as part of the government’s broader strategy to revitalise public transportation and support Ghana’s economic transformation agenda.
According to the minister, approximately 150 buses are expected to arrive early next year, marking the first phase of this rollout. Mr. Nikpe explained that MMTL’s current fleet consists of just 134 operational buses, making it challenging for the company to maintain operations, expand routes, and meet the increasing demand for affordable and reliable public transport.
In response to questions from Members of Parliament, the minister emphasized that this new procurement is part of a larger plan to modernize terminal facilities, enhance service quality, and create more employment opportunities in the sector.
“Mr Speaker, I wish to announce to this House that the company is in the process of acquiring new buses—about 500 of them over a short to long term—to augment our operations,” Mr. Nikpe stated.
““These buses will be deployed within the country to optimise existing routes and establish new ones in underserved areas.” He further revealed that Metro Mass Transit is taking steps to operationalise aspects of a 24-hour economy, starting with its vehicle maintenance department and traffic unit, to ensure buses remain available and functional at all times.
