The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has announced a special temporary bonus for licensed miners across the country to motivate local producers and combat gold smuggling. Starting Wednesday, August 27, 2025, licensed miners will receive an additional GHC832 per pound of gold sold to GoldBod. This means that a pound of gold, which typically trades at GHC 8,868 on the local market, will now sell for GHC 9,700.
The Board’s decision comes in response to ongoing concerns from licensed miners regarding the decline in local gold prices in recent months, primarily due to the continuous appreciation of the Ghana Cedi. GoldBod stated that the bonus aims to ensure that miners, who have significantly contributed to the country’s increased gold output and foreign exchange earnings, are not adversely affected by the rising value of the local currency.
To ensure the smooth implementation of this initiative, the Board has equipped and instructed its licensed traders nationwide to guarantee prompt payment of the bonus to all miners who sell their gold through official channels.
This measure is both a motivation and a safeguard. We want miners to feel valued for their role in strengthening the economy, while also discouraging smuggling,” said Prince Kwame Minka, Media Relations Officer at GoldBod.
