FDA warns against cannabis-laced alcohol, shuts illegal facility

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a warning regarding two alcoholic beverages: Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur and Jupiter 1990. Laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of marijuana extracts in both products. In a statement released on Sunday, May 18, the Authority announced that these drinks are not registered and are considered unsafe for public consumption. Investigations have traced their production to FAMUDE Catering Services, an unlicensed operation based in the Ashanti Region.

Following the discovery, the FDA took decisive action to shut down the facility, FAMUDE’s license was revoked, and the matter was referred to the Suntresu District Police for further investigation. The FDA emphasised its continued collaboration with the Ghana Police Service’s Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) to monitor and contain the situation.

In April, despite enforcement efforts, the FDA received intelligence that Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur was still being sold in Koforidua. This led to the uncovering of a new, unlicensed production site linked to the same illicit operation. The FDA is urging the public to avoid consuming the identified products and to report any suspected distribution points to authorities.
