The Minister-designate for Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak has expressed dismay at the current budget allocation for feeding prisoners in Ghana, describing it as unacceptable and dehumanizing. At his vetting before the appointment committee in Parliament, he revealed his shock upon learning that the daily feeding cost for a prisoner is a mere GH¢1.80, an amount he said is inadequate to sustain the basic nutritional needs of any individual.
“I was shocked when I heard that the rationing for feeding a prisoner in Ghana is GH¢1.80 for the whole day. With the greatest respect, even the cats and dogs in our houses—how much food do we give them? Yet we put our own compatriots, because of one mistake or the other, in a system designed to correct them, and we feed them with GH¢1.80, expecting them to be healthy”, Muntakah remarked.
The Minister-designate emphasized the gravity of the situation, underscoring the link between adequate nutrition and the physical and mental well-being of inmates. He pledged to address the issue if confirmed as Minister, stating, “It is a very serious thing, and I assure my colleagues that I will pay attention to it and address it.”
