Relationship coach Rev. Dr. Nanayaa Prempeh has encouraged couples to place emotional intelligence at the heart of building and sustaining healthy marriages. Speaking on Upside Down on Channel One TV on Sunday, February 15, she emphasised that beyond love and attraction, partners must cultivate the ability to understand each other emotionally and respond with maturity.
She further identified communication, finances, and sex as critical areas that can either strengthen or undermine relationships, stressing that marital intimacy extends far beyond physical intercourse.
She explained that emotional intelligence helps couples recognise warning signs early and build stronger communication, especially when differences and misunderstandings arise. Rev Dr Prempeh also encouraged men to be approachable and emotionally available, arguing that openness creates trust and makes it easier for women to express concerns without fear.
“Communication, finances, and sex are central to marriage. Within marriage, sex is not limited to physical penetration—it also encompasses romance, affection, and emotional connection. Scripture teaches that the marriage bed is undefiled before God, meaning that whatever a husband and wife mutually agree upon to bring each other joy is permitted, provided it is not abusive. No pastor should dictate how spouses express intimacy, as it is ultimately about shared pleasure and respect. Emotional intelligence, therefore, remains a vital foundation for sustaining this bond,” she explained.
