The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced plans to roll out a cashless payment system for spot fines, aimed at promoting transparency and accountability. This follows the Authority’s October 2025 decision to suspend all spot fines issued by its Compliance Team on roads nationwide, citing inadequate public education and concerns from motorists about cash payments and whether funds were properly accounted for.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Friday, February 13, DVLA’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Stephen Attuh, explained that the Authority is developing an online platform that will enable drivers to pay fines directly to the DVLA. According to him, motorists who commit traffic offences will be able to make electronic payments at the point of enforcement, eliminating the need for cash transactions.
“So we’re putting in place a platform that allows for payment online so that if you are caught on the road having committed an infraction, if they charge you, you pay, and you see that you are paying directly to DVLA. And we are sure that that will leave us with some level of transparency,” he stated.
