Bawumia best suited to lead NPP, not Ghana – Hamza Suhuyini

A member of the Communications Team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hamza Suhuyini, has argued that while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) may be best positioned to lead the opposition party, he is not suited to lead the country. Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, August 27, he acknowledged Dr. Bawumia’s calm temperament, composure, and ability to unify his party, describing these qualities as assets that make him stand tall among the NPP’s aspirants. He was confident that delegates of the party would likely rally behind the former Vice President in the upcoming primaries.

“In all honesty, Dr. Bawumia stands tall. His temperament is good, not unduly aggressive, calm and collected. His focus on the bigger picture of providing leadership within the New Patriotic Party is commendable. I do not doubt that at the end of the day the delegates are likely to give their mandate to him,” Mr. Suhuyini said. However, he stressed that Dr. Bawumia’s suitability ends at the party level and does not extend to national leadership. Citing the former Vice President’s record in managing the economy, Mr. Suhuyini questioned what new solutions Bawumia would bring if entrusted with the presidency.

“As to whether he is best suited to lead the country, that is where I disagree, because I have seen his track record, and sometimes I ask myself what exactly Dr. Bawumia wants to come and do. He could not manage the economy as Vice President. When it comes to leading his party, he stands tall. But it is not Dr. Bawumia who would secure them the presidency,” he argued.

The NPP is expected to elect its flagbearer in primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026, with Dr. Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong among the leading figures set to contest.

Meanwhile, Miracles Aboagye, an aide to Dr. Bawumia, has maintained that the former Vice President remains the party’s fastest path to victory in the 2028 general elections, insisting that his performance in the 2024 polls gives the NPP a stronger electoral base than any first-time aspirant.
