Unforgiveness may harm both heart health and mental well‑being

Psychologist Derrick Oppong has cautioned that holding on to unforgiveness can negatively impact mental health and overall well‑being. His remarks came as the world observed World Forgiveness Day, dedicated to promoting reconciliation, emotional healing, and peace.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Oppong explained that refusing to forgive those who have wronged us can foster unhealthy lifestyles and heighten the risk of complications such as heart‑related conditions. He noted that individuals who cling to resentment often make choices aimed at avoiding those who hurt them, which can cause them to miss valuable opportunities for growth and success.

He further warned that unforgiveness may drive some into destructive behaviours, including substance abuse and promiscuity, in attempts to retaliate against offenders—actions that ultimately harm the individuals themselves and undermine their mental health.

Meanwhile, some Ghanaians shared their perspectives, acknowledging that while certain offences are difficult to forgive, life’s unpredictability makes it wiser to let go of past hurts, embrace forgiveness, and move forward in peace.
