The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reiterated his commitment to working with any democratically elected government in Ghana, emphasising that his role is to provide discreet counsel to leaders rather than engage in public criticism. Addressing members of the Asante community in Toronto on Saturday, June 20, he explained that his approach to governance is guided by discretion and a focus on national stability.
“My conviction is that once a government is elected by the people of Ghana, I must work with the President and offer my advice privately,” he stated. He noted that he maintains constructive relations with successive administrations, including the current government.
“I work with whoever Ghanaians elect as President; I am now working with Mahama,” Otumfuo affirmed. He stressed that while he continues to advise leaders, he refrains from publicly criticising them even when his counsel is not taken. “Those who will listen, do listen; those who don’t, they don’t. But I will not say in public that a President ignored my advice,” he added.
He noted that he is often politically labelled despite his neutral stance, but said he remains unfazed by such perceptions. “So sometimes they would brand me as NDC, the next time they would say I am NPP. And in all, I say, I like it and would even add that I am CPP.
I do this to ensure there’s peace in Ghana,” he added. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II also used the occasion to highlight Ghana’s openness to the world, saying the country remains welcoming to investment, tourism, and international collaboration. “Ghana is open for business, open for tourism, and open for collaboration,” he said.
