Police arrest suspect in murder of UCC student

A 39-year-old man has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service in connection with the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a Level 200 student at the University of Cape Coast (UCC). Her body was discovered at Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast. The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was arrested on Monday, June 15, 2026, around 7:15 p.m. His arrest occurred at the Pedu Lorry Station, conducted by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, following what police described as sustained intelligence-led operations.

Preliminary investigations indicate that on June 11, 2026, at approximately 6:48 p.m., Mensah picked up Innocentia from Ayensu Plaza, located within the university’s hostel area. Investigators say the suspect, who claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, subsequently transported her to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen alive. The arrest comes just days after the discovery of the student’s body at the beach, and the circumstances surrounding her death are still under investigation.

According to investigators, one of the deceased’s roommates told police that Innocentia had called to inform her that she was going out to meet an acquaintance. She reportedly left her room dressed in casual clothing but failed to return, prompting concern among friends and relatives.

Police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the murder are ongoing and have assured the public that further updates will be provided as the case progresses. The suspect remains in police custody and is assisting with investigations.
