The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called on the government to provide immediate assistance to residents displaced by flooding resulting from the controlled release of water from the Weija Dam. Addressing Parliament on Thursday, May 28, 2026, the MP described the situation in his constituency as critical, sharing that over the past three days he has been wading through floodwaters to help evacuate families and businesses from inundated areas.
“Mr Speaker, it hasn’t been easy at all. I have been swimming for the past three days, helping people to evacuate. My people are suffering. Weija Gbawe is under siege,” he stated. The flooding was triggered when all five spill gates of the Weija Dam were opened as part of routine management to control rising water levels and safeguard the dam’s structure, leading to a surge that affected nearby communities. According to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), at least 85 residents have been relocated to designated safe shelters.
