Nigeria’s Tinubu to run for second term after party primary win

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu will seek a second and final four‑year term in January after overwhelmingly defeating a surprise challenger in the ruling party primaries, results released on Sunday, May 24, showed. The All Progressives Congress held its presidential primaries on Saturday, where Stanley Osifo unexpectedly contested Tinubu. The president secured nearly 11 million votes compared to Osifo’s 16,500.

Tinubu has earned praise from foreign investors for implementing some of Nigeria’s boldest reforms, including scrapping fuel and electricity subsidies, ending foreign exchange controls, and overhauling the tax system. His re‑election prospects were further boosted after an opposition pact to field a single candidate collapsed earlier this month.

Tinubu first assumed office in 2023 after defeating his two main rivals, who unsuccessfully challenged the outcome in court, alleging electoral fraud. He has consistently maintained that his victory was fair.
