Following a directive from the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has withdrawn a policy that barred tertiary institutions from engaging or posting retired staff. The move came after a meeting between Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu and the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).
The Minister instructed GTEC to immediately rescind its October 1, 2025, directive on retirement age and post-retirement contracts for Academic Senior Members of public universities. In compliance with this instruction, and pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure broad consensus and institutional sustainability, GTEC on Monday afternoon announced the immediate withdrawal of the October 1, 2025, policy directive.
A letter dated April 27, 2026 signed by Prof Augustine Ocloo, Deputy Director-General at GTEC, on behalf of the GTEC Director-General and copied to all stakeholders, indicated that further guidance will be communicated following the conclusion of stakeholder consultations.
