The government has introduced a significant reform to the school placement process. Under the new policy, candidates of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will now select their preferred Senior High Schools only after their results are released. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu explained that the initiative is aimed at strengthening the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) and enabling students to make more informed decisions.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, April 1, he noted that candidates will be given a one-week window following the release of their results to finalise their school choices. He emphasised that the previous system required students to choose schools without knowing their academic performance, often leading to unsatisfactory placement outcomes.
“In the past, students had to choose schools without knowing their final aggregates, which often disrupted the placement process. Under the new policy, a mandatory one-week period will be provided after results are released, allowing students to confirm their choices based on actual performance,” he explained. The Minister expressed confidence that this approach will promote fairness, minimise placement challenges, and enhance efficiency in admissions to Senior High Schools
